EarSketch

Hello Everyone! For Week 3’s Technology Resource, I have decided to focus on EarSketch. I have doing A LOT of Python recently for a separate course and felt this was a good place to start and very in topic for my current workload.
What Is EarSketch?

EarSketch is a website that allows students to use code (JavaScript or Python) with musical tracks to create and mix music. Students can work with the built-in library of sounds, instruments, and samples or add their own to create original musical works. In terms of creating original music, it's similar to GarageBand, but EarSketch also includes the use of code to create scripts and program different functionality.

EarSketch helps teach core topics in computer science, music, and music technology in a fun and engaging way. Two of the most popular programming languages are taught through “manipulating loops, composing beats, and applying effects to a multi-track digital audio station.”

EarSketch has been used by over 1,000,000 students in all 50 states and in over 180 countries. While most commonly used at the high school level, it has been successfully used in elementary, middle, high school, and college-level courses and activities.

Key Features of EarSketch:

Code system

EarSketch blends coding with the creation of music. Using two of the most popular programming languages, Python and JavaScript. This blending allows for students to develop a deeper appreciation of coding by tying it to something they enjoy and care about.

Curriculum

EarSketch offers full curriculums for teachers and educators to take advantage of in teaching their students. These lessons are a step-by-step guide For teachers who may be more confident in their own coding skills, these lessons are a great supplementary tool.

Pros:

Allows students to see connections between code and creativity through a step-by-step process.

Cons:

Programming system is a bit confusing and overwhelming at first, the built-in curriculum is a “one fit for all” model and requires adaptation for a class-wide / student-focused course.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, EarSketch is not a simple tool to use, it holds a great amount of potential for a subject / topic that is becoming more and more popular and important. This program is a really great opportunity to bring STEM into the classroom. EarSketch is a challenging tool for students to learn and explore coding in a meaningful way, while there are some drawbacks in the initial introduction to the program overall it showcases a lot of promise if properly introduced.
